How do you rub back a tannic acid and iron nitrate stain to bring out contrast?
Using an oiled Scotch-Brite pad, the surface is rubbed back so that stain in the straight grain areas comes off more easily than stain in the end grain stripe areas, since the straight grain sheds finish faster. Rubbing harder increases the contrast between the light and dark areas.
