How do you remove the tumbler from a flintlock?

The tumbler sits on a square shaft with a very slight taper, so once it breaks free it pops loose quickly. The plate is supported in a vise closed just enough to hold it without gripping the tumbler, then a punch (brass or mild steel) is placed on top of the tumbler shaft and tapped to knock the tumbler free.
