How do you apply iron nitrate stain to a rifle stock?

Pour a small amount of iron nitrate into a container, dip a Scotch-Brite pad in it, and scrub it onto the stock. Scrubbing helps burnish and smooth the wood while applying the stain. The key is to keep the stain out of the inlets, since inlet areas were traditionally never stained and the stain can react with the metal parts that fit into them. After staining, let the stock dry for 15 to 30 minutes before heating it.
