How do dye stains compare to iron nitrate on curly maple?
Used alone, dye stains tend to look weak and washed out compared to iron nitrate, though an additional coat can help some. Jim prefers to use dye stains in combination with iron nitrate, applying dye over the iron nitrate at the end if he wants to adjust the color.
