Can the color of iron nitrate stain be adjusted or tailored?

Not very much. Iron nitrate gives a great, durable stain, but it is not highly adjustable, so the final color will depend on the wood rather than a specific shade a builder has in mind. Every piece of wood finishes a bit differently.
