What is the most period-correct way to finish a cherry stock?

Cherry was probably seldom stained in the period, it was just finished with an oil. Over time cherry darkens a lot with exposure to sunlight. Just sitting the finished rifle in the sun will help it develop a beautiful color. If you want to stain it today, an aniline dye is a good choice (TransTint, Laurel Mountain Forge stains, etc.).
