What is the most period-correct way to finish a cherry stock?

Cherry was probably seldom stained in the period. It was just finished with an oil. Over time cherry darkens a lot with exposure to sunlight, so just sitting the finished rifle in the sun will help it develop a beautiful color. If you want to stain it today, an aniline dye is a good choice. Trans-Tint and Dangler's both work well.
