I used iron nitrate on the stock and now there's light surface rust on the metal parts. What happened?

The iron nitrate likely got into the inlets. If you keep it off the inlets and recessed areas, there's no rust problem, no neutralization needed. The instructions say to neutralize, but many experienced builders skip this when the solution stays on exposed surfaces only.
