My stock finish oil has a solid skin on top. Is it ruined?
No. Puncture through the skin layer and use the oil underneath, it's still good. To prevent this: drop marbles into the can to raise the oil level, or use Bloxygen (inert gas spray) to fill the headspace. All oil finishes will eventually skin over from air exposure.
