Escutcheon

A small metal plate inlet into the stock that reinforces the wood where a barrel key passes through. On the standard J.K. Hawken each is marked with dots to show where it goes. In the German silver inlay package the four key inlays are unmarked, and the two smaller ones go nearest the muzzle.
