J.K. Hawken Rifle Kit with Patchbox and Inlays — Step 15: Installing the Patchbox and Inlays
This step is for kits ordered with the optional patchbox and inlay package. It is the last assembly step. Do it after all other parts are fit and before you finish the metal and wood.
Patchbox:
Install the kick-open spring in its inlet. Attach it to the stock with the provided screw.
Fit the patchbox surround and lid to the pre-cut mortise (the recess cut into the stock for it). It should fit with very little adjustment. If needed, use transfer color to refine the fit, as described in Notes on Fitting Parts to Stock. Screw it in place.
Install the catch spring by screwing it into its inlet. Make sure it is fully seated and the screw is tight.
Close the lid to see how the catch works. The spring catch can be adjusted. Don’t be afraid to bend the spring slightly to change how much it engages the lid. The spring head should not rub on the box surround. If it does, file a small amount from the bottom of the head and check the function again.
Inlays:
The inlay package includes a German silver cheek inlay and four German silver key inlays. The key inlays were installed in Step 6. Install the cheek inlay so the black marker line is on the outside of the inlay and nearest the top of the stock. The inlay is pre-bent to fit the stock, so this orientation is necessary.
If you like, the inlay can be polished before it is installed.
Attach the inlay with the included German silver brads. A small amount of CA glue (super glue) or epoxy can be used under the inlay as well.
Important: Do not try to hold the inlay in place with glue alone. It will fail over time. The brads are necessary.
Polish the inlays as desired.
