J.K. Hawken Rifle Kit — Step 11: Adjusting the Triggers
Video for this step: https://kiblerslongrifles.com/v/hawken-11. Southern Mountain Rifle video. The double set triggers adjust the same way.
With the lock at half and full cock, check to ensure there is free play between the trigger bars and the sear. This can be evaluated by wiggling the trigger shoes with the hammer at the appropriate positions. Triggers should have around 1/16" of wiggle before contacting the sear. This ensures there is no pressure on the sear at the half- and full-cock positions, which is important for safety and proper function.
If there is interference between the sear and trigger bars, material must be removed from the bar of the appropriate trigger. This can be done with a file or belt sander. In either case, remove a little material and check for the proper wiggle, or clearance.
Tip: This free play is a safety feature. Do not skip the half-cock and full-cock check. The sear must not be under pressure until a trigger is deliberately pulled.
