J.K. Hawken Rifle Kit — Step 6: Installing the Key Inlays and Keys

Locate the four key inlays, or “escutcheons.” Each is marked with machined dots on the edge to indicate where it should be installed in the stock.

• The inlay with one dot installs nearest the breech on the lock side of the stock.

• The inlay with two dots installs nearest the breech on the cheek-piece side.

• The inlay with three dots installs nearest the muzzle on the lock side.

• The inlay with four dots installs on the cheek side nearest the muzzle.

In each case, position the side of the inlay with the dots upward, or nearest the top of the barrel. The inlays should lightly press into place, but fit if necessary using the Notes on Fitting Parts to Stock.

Secure the inlays with the provided screws. The inlay screws look best with the slots “clocked” so they run parallel to the barrel. If a particular screw slot doesn’t line up, try a different screw.

With the stock and barrel lightly clamped in the vise, insert the key marked “1” into the slot nearest the breech. The engraved number “1” should be upward, or nearest the top of the barrel. Gently tap into place with a mallet. If resistance is encountered, the key slot or underlug must be adjusted.

To adjust the fit, you will generally remove wood from the top of the slot in the stock, or metal from the bottom of the underlug slot, by filing. A flat needle file works well for this. Attempt to install the key and repeat until it can be pushed snugly into place. Repeat this process with key “2.”
