Appalachian Barn Gun Kit (Percussion) — Step 3: Installing the Lock
Video for this step: https://kiblerslongrifles.com/v/barn-gun-percussion-3. Hawken video with a percussion lock. The fitting process is the same.
Test the lock function out of the stock first. Work the lock by hand while it is out of the stock, and do not let the hammer snap forward. Hold the hammer and ease it down to rest each time. Inspect the sear and tumbler relationship. Make sure the sear is falling fully into the full-cock notch when the lock is cocked. Apply pressure to the sear while holding the hammer to feel the sear/tumbler engagement, and make sure there is positive engagement.
Once the lock is installed in the stock with the barrel in place, place a piece of hard rubber or leather on the nipple and trip the lock several times. Make sure your fingers are clear of the hammer’s travel path. This helps verify that the lock is functioning properly.
Warning: Never trip the lock while it is out of the stock. Letting the hammer fall with nothing to stop it can damage the lock.
The lock will fit with little to no wood removal. If it does not fit fully in the inlet, adjust it using transfer color and the steps outlined in “Notes on Fitting Parts to Stock.”
Install the included lock bolt washer, followed by the lock bolt. The lock and stock are already drilled for this bolt, so no drilling is needed.
