Appalachian Barn Gun Kit (Flintlock) — Step 3: Installing the Lock

Video for this step: https://kiblerslongrifles.com/v/barn-gun-3. Southern Mountain Rifle video with the same Ketland lock. Older video. Your lock comes drilled and tapped, so skip 8:03 to 14:26.

Test the lock function out of the stock first. With the flint removed for safety, work the lock while it is out of the stock. Inspect the sear and tumbler relationship. Make sure the sear is falling fully into the full-cock notch when the lock is cocked. Apply pressure to the sear while holding the cock to feel the sear/tumbler engagement, and make sure there is positive engagement.

If everything feels right, replace the flint and trip the lock with the frizzen closed several times. Make sure your fingers are clear of the flint’s travel path. This process helps verify that the lock is functioning properly.

Warning: Never trip the lock without the flint in place and frizzen closed. This would cause damage to the lock.

When installing the lock, particular care must be paid to the fit between the lock bolster and the side of the barrel. The bolster should contact the barrel with no gap present. When properly fit, the plate should bottom out in the inlet and the bolster should contact the side of the barrel.

The lock will fit with little to no wood removal. If it does not fit fully in the inlet, adjust it using transfer color and the steps outlined in “Notes on Fitting Parts to Stock.”

Install the included front and rear lock bolt washers, followed by the front and rear lock bolts. The lock and stock are already drilled for these bolts, so no drilling is needed.
