Southern Mountain Rifle Kit — Step 6: Installing the Double Set Trigger

Video for this step: https://kiblerslongrifles.com/v/smr-6

Install the lock and triggers in the stock and make sure the bolts holding them are tightened.

• Hold the front trigger between your fingers and try to move it back and forth. There should be slack between the front trigger and the lock sear; that is, you should have to pull the trigger back just slightly before it engages the sear.

• Confirm you have slack at both half cock and full cock. There should be absolutely no pressure on the lock sear unless the front trigger is pulled.

• If there is contact with the sear, disassemble the triggers and grind material from the top of the trigger bar. Reinstall and repeat until there is play in the front trigger. This is a requirement when setting up any flintlock with set triggers.

• With the lock and trigger in the stock, perform a similar check on the rear trigger. Apply pressure to the back of the rear trigger to feel when it contacts the sear. There must be slack between the rear trigger and the sear at both half cock and full cock.

• If there is no slack on the rear trigger, remove and disassemble it and grind material from the top of the rear trigger bar. Repeat until there is play between the rear trigger bar and the sear.

Tip: This slack is a safety feature. Do not skip the half-cock and full-cock checks. The sear must not be under pressure from either trigger bar until the trigger is deliberately pulled.
