Woodsrunner Rifle Kit — Step 15: Metal Finishing
Tip: Finishing materials are not included with this kit. You will need to supply your own metal finish (browning, bluing, or an aging solution) and your own wood stain and stock finish.
• The barrel will need to be draw-filed. This is done with a single-cut mill file, usually 6"–8". Hold the file nearly perpendicular to the barrel’s axis and push or pull it lengthwise. This produces long, finely sheared cuts and a relatively smooth finish. The barrel can be further smoothed with abrasive paper.
• Remove any remnants of gating on cast hardware with a file, and remove any visible parting lines as well. Finely file and sand the surfaces.
• Barrels can be finished using a variety of methods, including bluing, browning, or various aging techniques. If you plan to brown or age the lock, read Lock Care and Use first. The lock has to come apart before it is finished.
