Woodsrunner Rifle Kit — Step 9: Testing Lock and Adjusting Trigger

• Test the lock’s function out of the stock first. With the flint removed for safety, work the lock while it is out of the stock. Inspect the sear and tumbler relationship, and make sure the sear falls fully into the full-cock notch when cocked. Apply pressure to the sear while holding the cock to feel the sear/tumbler engagement, and make sure the engagement is positive.

• If everything feels correct, replace the flint and trip the lock several times with the frizzen closed to confirm proper function. Keep your fingers clear of the flint’s travel path.

Warning: Never trip the lock without the flint in place and frizzen closed. This would cause damage to the lock.

• With the lock and trigger installed in the stock and their bolts tightened, hold the trigger between your thumb and finger and try to move it back and forth. There should be a small amount of slack between the trigger and the lock sear before it engages.

• Confirm this slack exists at both half-cock and full-cock. There should be absolutely no pressure on the lock sear unless the trigger is pulled.

• If there is contact with the sear, remove the trigger and file a small amount of material from the top of the trigger bar, the area that contacts the sear. Reinstall and test again for proper trigger/sear clearance. Repeat until the correct fit is achieved.

Tip: This slack is a safety feature. Do not skip the half-cock and full-cock check. The sear must not be under pressure until the trigger is deliberately pulled.
