Woodsrunner Rifle Kit — Step 5: Installing the Box Lid and Catch Spring

• Install the catch spring by screwing it in place. File the notch in the spring to adjust fit if necessary. The spring can be bent slightly to adjust its pre-load, or tension.

• The box lid dovetail cut-out should be a 100% match to the wood inlet machined in the stock for the patchbox lid.

• If any adjustment is needed on the box lid dovetail, make it with the installed buttplate in place. Brass is relatively soft and files easily; a medium-to-coarse three-cornered file works best. Don’t remove too much material, and don’t open up the wood inlet; only file the brass to match the wood.

• At this point, the wood box lid should fit the box inlet. Adjust the fit if needed by removing wood from the box lid or inlet; a three-cornered file works well here too.

• Once the box lid fits the inlet, file and sand its end flush with the buttplate.

Tip: As an option, a brass end plate can be attached to the back of the box lid. The box must be trimmed in length, the plate bent to shape, pinned or screwed in place, then filed to match both the box lid and the buttplate.
