The Southern Mountain Rifle is the slim, iron-mounted rifle of the southern Appalachians, built after the 1820s work of Whitson in western North Carolina. Later style than the Revolution-era kits — lean and plain where the longrifles are brass-mounted and ornate. Small-bore options make it light to carry and economical to shoot; favored for offhand and small game.
