What is a card scraper and where does it come from?

A card scraper is how craftsmen smoothed wood before sandpaper was invented. Sometimes loose metal or abrasives were used on a piece of felt with oil. This was mostly in the second half of the 18th century (1700s). It was less common to do anything with the wood or metal before that.
